Celebrating IPTC at the 2025 PIEF Conference
From October 26 to 29, players from across the personal injury and disability management sector converged in Sydney for the annual PIEF Conference. The IPTC team had a huge week, and engaged across the conference and beyond! Our adventures included:
- Leading the conversation during the conference proper
- Celebrating the accomplishments of the personal injury sector at annual awards dinner
- Celebrating IPTC over breakfast, and plotting the course forward with our friends at PIEF
PIEF are a valuable partner and supporter of the It Pays to Care team - we are always so grateful for their material and moral support.
Leading the Conversation
The It Pays to Care team led rich conversations throughout the PIEF Conference, continuing our tradition of thought leadership and confronting wicked problems.
Day 1 saw Tanya Cambey and Dr Mary Wyatt challenge the crowd from the stage of the Grand Ballroom. They asked whether, through funding medical care, we're funding recovery or further harm? They dove into a body of confronting evidence, explored in a series of articles for RTWMatters, that may indicate the latter... Have you considered how scans can be a 'gateway drug' to overtreatment? Or thought about whether these assessments are intended to 'improve health' or 'prove injury'?
On day 2, Rachael Ford and Dr Mary Wyatt led a panel and workshop on driving change in public sector organisations. Tables discussed the challenges of shifting culture in the public sector, and workshopped strategies for effectively realising meaningful change. Thank you to our esteemed panellists: Jason Lardelli (RTW Vic), Ash Evans (Taylor Fry), Chrstine Mazomenos (Office of the Public Sector Commissioner SA), Emma Hosking (Gallagher Bassett), and Eva Lai (Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service).
Celebrating the Sector
On Monday night, the team swapped the conference floor for the dancefloor at the PIEF Gala Dinner and Awards Night. We take this moment to acknowledge our wonderful colleague Tanya Cambey, who received a commendation for 'Outstanding Leadership by an Individual'.
Tanya is an unstoppable force for good in the world of work injury management. Beyond her incredible achievements at WorkCover Queensland, Tanya has led IPTC's advocacy with medical professionals and pioneered a program of professional development that models the principles of IPTC for GPs and other specialists. She does not shy away from challenging or confronting conversations. Safe to say, we think Tanya's leadership has been nothing short of outstanding.
Celebrating It Pays to Care
The conference wrapped up on Tuesday, but our connecting wasn't quite done!
On Wednesday morning, PIEF hosted a breakfast to celebrate the significant impact of the It Pays to Care policy in the three years since its launch. Mary, alongside PIEF CEO David Fryar, reflected on the journey to this point. They also shared information on the future of IPTC, the strategic focuses for the years to come, and invited collaborators to reach out for partnership activities.
The rest of the morning was spent with an intimate group of senior leaders - discussing the future of PIEF and reflecting on how conference learnings could be embedded in a way that benefits the work injury management sector.
